RE: Re: Telecommuting???
Dave:
At ECS all of our AS400 developers have the option of telecommuting and
most do it. 28.8/33.6 has proved to be a decent speed. We have always
used these spped modems to connect directly to the AWSC and used SNA over
Async. There is a fair amount of overhead in that solution and interactive
response time could have been better. Some of our developers ditched the
APPC type connection and opted for a straight terminal emulator (such as
PSI 3164) mainly for the speed, however they lost some flexibility for
multiple session support.

That has changed now. We are migrating our dial strategy to RAS over an NT
server and using TCP/IP to access the AS400. Response is lightning fast
and you gain the advantage of using any TN5250 client, using FTP etc. We
are still trying to use our existing 33.6 modems and the connection is very
adequate, however we will also be upgrading some lines to USR 56 X2.

We are not using an offline source editor, but with FTP it would be easy to
d/l the source and use something like Aldon's Flex/Edit. The version that
I have does not integrate FTP as a mechanism to do file xfter into/out of
the Flex Edit repository. Maybe a newer version of the product has that
feature.

Carl
