Before images are how the record appeared BEFORE the change. You need *BOTH if you want to be able to rollback changes using the journal. I have a client with a package that does not provide an audit train of changes to a patictular file. They wanted one but only if important fields had been changed. By using *BOTH and analysing the outfile I could compare on a field bases and generate their audit trail without modifing the package.
