The field is an "L" type field (defined in the phys file).

no H spec specified, and a quick glance at the manuals on datfmt on the
h spec seems to indicate that it only defines the edit format and
separator charactor for rpg output (I could be wrong on this - I quit
reading because I didn't think I was on the right track.

I did find an sql statement SET DATFMT in the sql manual.  I think this
might help me.  I'll let you know, I'm working on something else now.
