SYNON may be good for new development using new databases, but it is not good for new development using old (unrelational) files. Specifically, it does not support multiple record formats in a single database file, nor internally described database files, nor arrays (because these are not relational). It doesn't even like blanks in numeric fields. Also, it may be good for on-line screens, but it is not good for batch processing. I think the Cognos product represents a better choice for automating new development for existing databases. But it has been a long time since I looked at such tools. And IBM would probably recommend JAVA. By the way, I have no financial interest in any of the above.
