For my money there is no better source than  An Introduction to Database 
Systems by C.J. Date.  Chris Date worked at IBM early in the development 
of the relational model(and DB2).  And has been a force in its 
development ever since.  

There have been at least 6 or 7 editions so make sure you get one that 
is  reasonably current.  If you are located in the US Barns and Nobel 
usually have a copy or two in stock.
