If you were transfering the data as a CSV (Comma Seperated Values)
It might have had to do with COMMA's and QUOTE's  in the data.  

I had to some MAJOR data uploads a number of months ago and, after 
many trials & tribulations with CSV files, I gave up and had the 
person generating the data create DBF files which I uploaded using 
ODBC (Hit's driver).

After getting the ODBC driver working the way I wanted it to, it 
worked fine (albiet a bit slow).
