You would think that a company that made so much $$$$$ from the high end of
the processor line would publish more about running a large CPU like you
describe.

The major unpublished secret about running an n-way processor is that you
should purchase the SMP (Symetric Multi-Processor) feature of OS/400.  In
the US this is $15,000 list (however IBM sells nothing at list, it's better
to have their sales people spend 75% of their time haggling about price).
This allows a query request (SQL, OPNQRYF, logical file build, etc.) to
span multiple processors.
