As I understand JFK's slip, it was a case of idiom vs textbook. JFK said (pardon the spelling), "Ich bin -ein- Berliner." Correct, by the book, 'I am a Berliner.' Unfortunately, a 'Berliner' is/was also a popular jelly doughnut.
