Paul,

With an externally described file, you can use a field, but it must
exactly match the definition of the first key field. With a KLIST, you
can use the first n fields of an m part key where m>=n. Here again, each
KLIST field must exactly match the corresponding key field. However, if
you want to use a program described file, you can use a character
variable of any length you like up to the total length of the key. It
does not necessarily need to have a length that matches the end of a key
subfield.
