Packed vs zoned numeric data

Packed is the default numeric data type, and the only one for CL.
However, if you do:

PGM PARM(&NUM)

DCL VAR(&NUM) TYPE(*DEC) LEN(5 0)
DCL VAR(&ALPHA) TYPE(*CHAR) LEN(5)

CHGVAR VAR(&ALPHA) VALUE(&NUM)

CALL PGM(MYPGM) PARM(&ALPHA)

You will be passing a valid zoned value if &NUM >= 0.
