We have a 436 running V3R6 and SSP 7.5; our 9.6k analog lines are
currently defined only to the S/36 side, and all remote devices access
the 400 side using PASSTHRU. We are moving to V3R7 and 56k digital
lines, which will be defined on the 400 side. Because you can't use the
same lines on the 400 and S/36 simultaneously, IBM Tech Support has
suggested dropping communications from the S/36 configuration and adding
dummy *local* WS controllers for the (old) remote workstations, then
mapping the 400 remote device names onto these dummy controllers using
CHGM36CFG. All communications will then be handled by OS/400, and the
S/36 machine (which is a virtual machine, anyway) will treat the remote
devices as virtual local WS's.
I think this makes sense, and am going to give it a try, but would like
to contact someone who has actually done it. There are a lot of 236's
and 436's out there, but apparently very few running full-blown dual
operating systems, applications, and communications. I can understand
why :) -- we're in transition, and will eventually move all production
to the 400 side and drop the S36 machine, but I gotta get thru the next
two months!
TIA -- Willy
