You can connect via ethernet and UTP to the AS400 directly via 802.2
protocols.  You do not need or require a server of any kind to do this.
Emulation would be the APPC variety so you can get display, printer, file
xfer, etc. through the APPC controller on the AS400.  Ethernet cards are
cheaper than twinax cards and provide 10MB vs 1MB in speed.  You can run
Windows, Win95, or WinNT.

You will spend about $2500. on the 2617 ethernet adapter for the AS400 and
then $200. per pc for the client software.
