... anyone know what the average tenure of a technology worker (System i or
other) is these days?

After working in the business field for about 10 years after college, I
went back to school for Computer Science degree...
First job back in 1988 - RPG junior programmer - 15 months - laid off
Second job - RPG Programmer - 1 year - left for third job
Third job - Got hired back at my first job (BIG raise) - RPG & COBOL
Programmer - 2 years
Fourth job - Worked for city (loved security, hated pace of change way too
slow) RPG Programmer/Network Administrator - 3 years
Fifth job - Moved to smaller city (lakes area, great place to raise my
family) - Programmer, Billing Manager, Data Collections Manager, Operations
Manager - 8 years (company reorganized)
Unemployed for about a year (could of been employed sooner, but didn't want
to move) - taught part-time at Technical College (would of stayed, but no
permanent job or benefits)
Sixth job - Systems Analyst - Love my job, first job where I can work my 8+
hours and go home (work a few Saturdays to update software, but I get to
choose what fits my schedule) - 5 years and counting...hoping it is my last
job

My biggest professional thrill was when I got to meet and work with the
great Buck Calabro. He showed me how to do the fire jump! ;-)
