JOB TITLE: Manager of Back End Applications Development LOCATION: Corporate FLSA: Exempt MANAGER TITLE: Director Business Systems Development DATE (CREATED/REVISED): 2/8/2007 SUMMARY: The Manager of Back End Application Development provides technical leadership for the architecture and design of computer applications that are seen and used primarily by Butler Animal Health Supply associates or which provide database, business logic, or power computation support for front end applications. In addition, the manager provides the technical leadership to the team that creates and supports these back end applications. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The individual * Maintains a working knowledge of the operating environments (operating systems, database systems, security) under which back end applications run and continually evaluates the trends in these changing operating environments. 10% * Maintains an awareness of current practices and trends mid-range application development including methodologies, approaches, software languages, development tools, and recommends and develops standards for the development team to follow. Assures that both internal and front end development practices are consistent and in harmony with one another. 10% * Works with users to understand the use of back end applications and to define enhancements that increase operational efficiency and maintain regulatory compliance. 20% * Supervises Computer Operations (both server operations as well as iSeries) to assure the optimal system availability through implementation of well tested, quality assured applications and application changes. Oversees the tuning of the system memory, production database and data warehouse environments, and response times to ensure that business systems are meeting these performance standards. Advise management on need for hardware or software upgrades/expansion. 10% * Works closely with BAHS developers to create a positive, fun, challenging work environment that accomplishes the project objectives of Technology Division customers. Coaches the individuals for optimal professional performance and evaluates team members regarding their performance and is responsible for payroll and human resource policy compliance. 30%. * Works with and enhances management systems for reporting project progress and accomplishment. 10% Other duties relating to Technology and Sales as directed by the Director, Business Systems Development. 10% REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Education * Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or Business, or an equivalent combination of education and experience * Demonstrated continuing education in software development technologies Work Experience * Minimum of 6 years application development work experience * Minimum 2 years management experience or the equivalent in leading programming projects or application development teams to demonstrated success. * Prefer prior supervisory experience including hiring, discipline, training, and performance evaluation. Technical Skills * In depth knowledge of iSeries development products including OS/400, RPG/400, ILE/RPG, DB2/400, WDSCi * In depth knowledge of iSeries Client Access * Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite. Certification * NA Travel * Must be willing to travel 10% or more on an as-needed basis.
