Position Summary: The Senior System Administrator is responsible for the expert management of iSeries and RS/6000 computers including peripheral equipment, OS/400 and AIX operating systems and utilities, tape and disk storage subsystems, and logical security. The incumbent is responsible for training and mentoring co-workers in best use of OS/400 and AIX resources; developing, implementing standards, procedures and measures regarding security, recoverability, and performance. Duties include leading projects and consulting on projects. The Senior Systems Administrator acts as a source for direction, training, and guidance for less-experienced personnel. This position functions under general supervision using considerable initiative within guidelines received from the Director Technical Services. Career Path: The logical career progression for the Senior System Administrator would be to advance to the position of Director Technical Services. Key Problems & Challenges: The ongoing objective for the incumbent is to maximize OS/400 and AIX system integrity, availability, reliability and performance through performance monitoring, managing resource usage, upgrades, diagnostics, and troubleshoot-ing. This objective includes the administration of OS/400 and AIX interfacing devices which link 25+ AIX servers and iSeries computers, their printers and controllers to rest of the network. Document and report on OS/400 and AIX security, recoverability, and performance measures. Perform disaster recovery testing periodically to validate plans and ensure that core business systems can be successfully recovered. Work with the developers to ensure proper and optimum use of the system and peripherals. Principal Accountabilities: 1. Install, configure, and test upgrades to OS/400 and AIX operating systems, subsystems, and third-party utility software and migrate these upgrades across 25+ servers without adversely impacting normal production operations. 2. Design and configure OS/400 and AIX security schemas and administer systems and software security in compliance with corporate policy including the development and maintenance of security policies and procedures. 3. Working with the IBM Support Center and third-party vendor support, perform problem determination and resolution for all OS/400 and AIX computer hardware, operating systems, subsystems, and utility software. 4. Configure, tune, and monitor operating system network parameters to connect OS/400 and AIX computers with Local and Wide Area Networks optimizing performance, throughput, and availability for end users and peer-to-peer systems. 5. Document, and maintain local and remote disaster recovery procedures for the iSeries and RS/6000 computers and peripheral equipment that are aligned with the Company's business continuity objectives and data availability requirements; Also responsible for the recovery of the production systems in the event of a disaster. 6. Maintains a working knowledge of diagnostic tools for capturing and reporting statistics on the availability, resource utilization, and growth capacity of the iSeries and RS/6000 servers; responsible for capacity planning and performance management. 7. Administer iSeries and RS/6000 disk storage backup and recover procedures to ensure data availability and recovery. 8. Configure, test, and deploy system architecture which supports the design specifications and requirements of package software systems and internally developed applications. 9. Automate operations processes to increase productivity and overall improvements in costs. 10. Frequent off-shift and weekend work required with on-call support 7 by 24 by 365 with scheduled exceptions. 11.
