Weird CPYBOLA behavior with customer JDE file -- MI400

Does anybody know of a reason why, in going from V5R2 toV5R3, either (a) an instruction of the form "CPYBOLAWKASTR(X:Y), WKASTR(1:Y)" would start throwing MCH0603exceptions, or (b) JDE files would start returning funkyvalues for field display length in the system APIs thatretrieve file meta-data?
