And the press is trying to make it sound like your credit card number is grabbed "off the wire"; everyone is so worried about SSL and all that other stuff, and if anyone REALLY thinks about it, the odds of someone (other than espionage folks) getting any useful information that way is very low. The true reports from the security rags point out that the MAJOR problem is poorly secured backend systems. The folks that have managed to run of with thousands and 10's of thousands of credit card numbers did NOT use a Sniffer to do this. They penetrated the back end systems and made off with the entire file(s) containing this information. The cases where this has happened have id'd both insiders, former employees and yes, hackers from the outside.
