You question should not be generalized to all situations (which is what

I think you want). There are many circumstances where knowing how

it works is important: performance considerations, security con-

siderations, ...

A good example of the latter is IBM's support for the LANManager

password which is a severe security flaw. Had that been known,

people could have objected to the weak encryption scheme.
