I feel your pain. We've been having problems with client updates recently as well.
For PCMs, we usually do complete system testing on a test machine. This is especially goes if you're applying more than 1 or 2 PCMs at one swipe.
Client updates are tricky. We test them but things often manage to slip thru. There's just too many variables. Fortunately, it's very easy to "go back" on a client if bugs are discovered. (As happened to us last month on an R7.8 client update.)

Just curious, what level of testing do you do before applying a PCM or even a Client Update before applying to production?
