David,
You can also use VB with client access to automate the process.
I have a rumba macro that runs 24/7 on our AS400, logs in/out. I've also written VB scripts on 3270 (look & feel was identical to 5250) that extracts data and updates records.
This Client Access VB capability has long been underrated and under-utilized.
So, there's a solution on the cheap if that's what you need.

David,
Working with the LDA is a nightmare especially trying to get something to mimic a submit job you can place on the job scheduler. We had ROBOT at one time but switch to RevScheduler by RevSoft which does all the same functions but for a lot less cost - and they do not charge extra if you have a second partition. We have been using RevSoft ever since, over seven years now. RevScheduler has a built in Macro screen capture which you can run interactive jobs - HelpSystem has another product which does this function call ROBOT-REPLAY. I'd be more than glad to take this offline to share any experiences between the two products.

David,
I know this isn't what you asked, but I ran into so many of those (I was at R6) that I ended up purchasing Help System's ROBOT package. That allowed me to run any XA functions that require interactive screens to initiate both with their scheduling option (you can pick when to run it) or by manual request. It also has the option of inserting dates and other variables depending on current date and time values. Worked very well for us.

Subject: [MAPICS-L] PMC select and edit - AMJCI
I am looking to automate the select and edit program in PMC - AMJCI. I want to eliminate the input screen and pass the parameters required directly to the select and edit process. Has anyone done this? What are the positions on the LDA that hold the parameters?
TIA
