Some preliminary research has suggested it may be possible re-structure the XA file backup process to substantially decrease the amount of "Dedicated Mode" time required to back-up the XA files. In one series of tests (done over a period of several months on an Infor XA development iSeries, using a test XA database) XA file backups that, on average, required 13.5 minutes of "Dedicated Mode" time could be run "re-structured" in less than 1 minute of "Dedicated Mode" time.
However... we all know that what works in a development environment doesn't always work "in the real world".
To determine whether-or-not similar time savings can be realized outside of a development environment requires analysis of data (specifically, how much time is spent in each of the stages of the current XA file backup process) from "real world" XA installations running "real world" XA file backups.
The XA file backup process (in XA Release 6 and higher) has built into it the capability to capture and log this data to a file. If you're running XA release 6 or higher, and you are willing to collect this data (over a period of several months) and provide it for analysis, please contact me at James.Griesser@xxxxxxxxx<mailto:James.Griesser@xxxxxxxxx> and I'll send you information on how to "switch-on" the data gathering/logging function.
It takes less than 10 seconds (well okay, maybe 15...) to "switch-on" the data gathering/logging function inside of the current XA backup process. Gathering/logging this data should have no discernable effect on the time required to run your XA file backup. (...Although see the "what works in a development environment doesn't always work in the real world..." caveat above.) If necessary the XA file backup data gathering/logging function can be "switched-off" as quickly as easily as it's "switched-on".
