I may be the least experienced of all of the participants in this group
but what Jim listed below is correct.
We were entering Items via green screen and trying to use PDM+ to do some
offline "what if" work.
That caused us problems and necessitated our going to EPDM.
Also, I believe that when you turn on EPDM, PDM+ goes away - you don't
have both.
You will not be able to create the Item as you say below.
The ability to do that goes away when you turn on EPDM.
You will be creating the Enterprise Item, creating the Item Revision,
releasing the Item and creating the Item Warehouse as Jim says below.
I'll let the more experienced of you correct anything that I may have
gotten wrong.

Re: [MAPICS-L] PDM+ to EPDM
Create Enterprise Item (item revision will do this for you if it doesn't
exist)
Create Item Revision
Release Item
Create Item Warehouse(s)
Just watch yourself when releasing an item number that exists in
multiple sites. EPDM is sort of interesting since you can have the same
item in each site but you will only have _one_ itemasa/b/c record.

Tom,
EPDM is the way to go - you get a lot of additional capabilities that
you may want to use in the future. (Note: my info is from R6. But it
should only get better in R7.)
You have to set up items in Item Revisions. They then "Release to PDM".
Then you do the Item Balance.
We had the same issues when we converted, but it wasn't an issue after
we got the cards set up.

Subject: [MAPICS-L] PDM+ to EPDM
List-
We are working on setting up EPDM instead of PDM+.
Currently we are using CSM for sales order entry & COM for
shipping/billing. Our sales dept enters the item infomation if it is a
new item and then enters the sales order. Manufacturing is being done
in a legacy system. We are working on using XA for the manufacturing
and are starting with Routings.
I have a couple of questions that have come up:
1. From what I have seen in the documentation the information for Items
have to start in EPDM Item Revision then get released to PDM for item
warehouse to be created and to be used in order entry. Is this correct?
2. Is there any way to keep all of our secondary databases, cards,
cardfiles, templates, etc on Item and still use EPDM? In otherwords,
can I create the Item first, and then create the item revision later?
3. We are going to EPDM because it is the product that is getting all
the enhancements and will provide us the flexible and features we may
need at somepoint in the future. I imagine it is easier to do this now
when we have ~ 1 years worth of data in Items and no other PDM databases
used then in 5 years when we have fully used PDM+ and now need one
feature that is only in EPDM. Are there any reasons why we shouldn't
use EPDM?
Also, if there are any other helpful hints of the conversion process or
the mindsets changes needed that would be very much appreciated. Thank
you.
