Your first issue with using the Customer Item number x-ref is that, as far as I know, they do not print on pick lists, although I don't believe this would be a major change. Investigate the "Industry" and "Customer" Item Numbers, that x-ref to the 15 digit MAPICS Item#. It's maintainable on Menu: AMBM62 Option: 3 "Related Item Information" Orders can be entered using these 30 digit Industry or Customer Item Numbers, and both item numbers will be printed on invoices/acknowledgements. It sounds like it's good mostly for customer use and NOT internal. Probably not what you're looking for, but it is an option to consider and is supported within MAPICS. The result was summed up in one word: DISASTER! I had another client that created a cross reference file that had the MAPICS item number and a larger item number for internal use. They then modified the required programs, reports, and displays to retrieve and print/display their internal numbers. That was a lot of work but they had success.
