You may want to take a look at this website, especially their Excel Matrix

called ERP-Comparison2005.xls
It has a lot of interesting bits of info.

I am not associated with the company, nor can I vouch for them, just
sharing what I found.

http://www.180systems.com/ERPsystem-comparison.php

I found this while researching open system ERP's and liked what I saw
regarding Compiere.

I don't currently use SAP, but I was an SAP Business Analyst in a
previous life (roughly 4 years ago). This was with a large, U.S.
company that was in the process of implementing SAP across most, if not
all, of their business units. I participated on 4 of those
implementations over a 4-5 year period.

I am now with a smaller company that runs MAPICS.

SAP Pros
- Integration. All modules interface with each other extremely well, in
real time. In addition, any bolt on software worth it's weight has
built adaptors to integrate with SAP.
- Consolidation. Excellent from a large scale corporate standpoint.
- Drill down capability.
- Configuration. SAP tries to guide you toward "best practice" business
processes. However, most business case scenarios can be configured in
SAP.
- Security. Granting authorization can be very specific. Even down to
the field level.

SAP Cons
- Expensive.
- Complicated. Especially for end users, navigating around SAP can be
very overwhelming at first.
- Reporting. My experiences was that SAP Report writer is very
cumbersome. You'll have to use Crystal Reports or build customized
reports.
- Expensive. (yes, it's worth mentioning twice).
- Requires significant amount of IT resources, compared to a MAPICS
shop. Because of the complexity of SAP, it's tough to find a jack of
all trades in the SAP world.

As far as programming, I'm not a programmer, so I can't comment on the
pro's and con's of programming in RPG vs. ABAP (SAP's language). I can
say that there seemed to be an adequate amount of user exits and
triggers available to interject any custom code needed.

In a nutshell, my opinion is that SAP was great for the environment that
I worked with it in, which was many business units with tens of
thousands of users. However, SAP would be certainly be overkill for the
smaller environment that I'm in now with a few business units and
roughly 100 users. In this case, MAPICS certainly meets our needs. I
do understand that SAP does offer a scaled down, SMB solution these
days, though.

Hope this helps.

Hi list!

Anybody that is a current SAP power-user (and an ex-MAPICS power-user)
that can tell us the pros and cons of you experience with SAP?

1) Application wise?
2) Programming wise?

Please, US companies stories only.
