Roy, Thanks for the input but that kind of nightmare doesn't affect us. Our lead-time for manufacturing is anywhere from 3 to 6 weeks! That and the seasonal nature of our sales means that we have always had to build and hold inventory. We will be picking from stock not building to order. Either you ship in the 72-hour window or the order gets cancelled! This means production control has to determine what action is necessary to meet the customer demand AND production has to get it done in that 72 hour window. We deal with several manufacturers where it was taking a full day to determine what lower level components had to be produced to supply final assembly - they had to wait on the next night's MRP run. That meant they had 2 days to get the orders out the door. They tried changing the MRP run time so it occurred after the EDI influx but the duration of the MRP run caused interference with normal start-of-shift activities. Because MRP was still running several inquiries and reports were unavailable. They considered carrying extra stock but quickly determined the indicated stocking level would be financially ruinous. They overcame the challenge by installing Rapid Priority Management (RPM) software that automatically details the actions required in a daily report. The reports run every morning after the EDI influx and are waiting for production supervisors when they arrive each day. The reports replaced all the prior start-of-shift activities. I'd be happy to provide contact information for these clients off line. We have recently been told by a customer (W@@-Mart) that we will need to ship directly to stores instead of to distribution centers! Obviously, the volume of orders and associated transactions will increase tremendously - probably from one order per month to several hundred per day! On the bright side, we have a 72 hour window from order receipt to product shipment before the order is cancelled. I'm sure we're not the only manufacturer going through this and I hope to hear those success stories. Thanks in advance! Also, how is anyone in this situation handling the EDI portion of the transactions? Any help or direction is greatly appreciated.
