That is our last resort option.  What is really frustrating is we added 
the field to screen AMVA4E1R which is the Customer Billing/Pricing and on 
maintenance the field will update, but on adds it will not.

COM is so much fun to work with... NOT

Why don't you look into using user exit UMVCUM1R to add the fields during 
an
"add" only?
