The reason the keys are not specified as unique at the file level is because
this check is performed by the application and not by the system. At one point
(many moons ago), this could be a significant difference in performance for
jobs (IFL, Conversions) that added alot of records to a table.

        Thanks

I suppose that MAPICS has some reason why they did not specify the key
as
unique for logical POITEML3 which uses the fields order number and po
item
        sequence number for its key.

You are right. PO item seq. no is unique within PO. It is even a
        non-maintainable automatically generated value.

I'm not really trying to accomplish anything except to understand why
the
combination of order number and po item sequence does not make the
record
unique. Is the po item sequence not equivalent to a 'line' number which
tells you basically what line number this record is on the po?

        Thanks

Right, That's part of the primary key. What are you trying to accomplish
here. I'm thinking maybe you need a blanket order.

        Thanks,

Are we all talking about the same fields here? I am not referring to
field
LINSQ in poitem. I am referring to field POISQ in poitem when I say po
        item sequence.

"So, we are saying that the combination of order number and po item
sequence does not make it unique. So, it is possible to create two line

purchase order that have the same po item sequence."

        Yes. You could have:

        Order #: P123456
        Item: ABC123
        Warehouse: 1
        Line Seq: 1

        ... and...

        Order #: P123456
        Item: ABC444
        Warehouse: 1
        Line Seq: 1
