RE: AS400 Backup, Daily vs. Monthly

For those wanting access to the "automated" MAPICS Backup routines,

you the customized versions for our XA 5.5 environment that I'm running
every day...fully automated...works beautifully.

Again...I didn't develop these, so don't thank me...I'm merely sharing
what somebody else shared with me, that solved my problems.  Believe me,
I understand your frustrations.<g>  Sorry it took so long for me to get
back here...I don't get back here that often...my apologies.

useful bit of info.<g> That would enable me to schedule a special
month-end backup.  As you've indicated, would have to NOT run the normal
daily backup schedule on those days.  Means I would have to setup the
OMITDATE for every month-end date.  Sounds messy...but it might work...

In the meantime, I've just moved the AS400 backup to 3:00 AM, gets it
out of the way of the month-end activity.

For those who are chiding about shipping performance and other such
assumptions...don't.<g>  They make a decision each month as to how far
to chase backlog for revenue enhancement.  If the backlog is long, they
chew into it...solves two problems.  It's not a "hafta", it's a "wanna".
It's called management discretion...anything outside of their normal
3-day ship cycle is eligible for shipment at month-end.

In the job scheduler you can specify an OMITDATE on the job.
So on your daily backup, just enter the OMITDATE for each day it runs on
the same date as the month end backup.

Not pretty unless you want to do some coding.
The other option I believe was previously mentioned was in a CL program
check whether it's the month end date and if YES, run month end backup,
if NO run the daily backup.

Our backups are scheduled via the AS/400 job scheduler using the MAPICS
enhancement SH62874.

Before the backup executes we run a job that:
1) Builds a list of all users in the environment
2) Sends a break message for them to logout
3) After 5 minutes we end the jobs, including Browser jobs
4) Close all IM transaction batches and run the transaction register
5) End the U-jobs by putting them on "HOLD"
6) Run the backup
7) Start the U-Jobs
