We too have paid our dues in the course of past hardware upgrades... We
switched from tier- to user-based licensing several years ago and the
perceived cost was the equivalent of re-purchasing all of our production
modules.  It certainly motivates the administrators to seek-out
alternative applications, but there is often just too much in the
historical investment to justify the EFFORT of migrating.

We have incrementally added modules to get away from the custom-code
that was developed 30+ years ago... can't honestly say the benefits have
been realized.  My best comparison is, "Custom-developed code is like a
hand-made suit; MAPICS is like buying off-the-rack"; the custom-code can
be tailored to exactly meet your business needs [at a price], where
MAPICS never seems to fit everywhere, just-right.  You can certainly
justify the price of a programmer with the offsetting cost of MAPICS
Support on an annual basis.

Thanks, this is helpful.  We don't have enough DASD to save to disk but
perhaps we will have enough after our next hardware upgrade.

Incidentally, we are in the same situation as Joe P who wrote earlier
about
MAPICS fees for processor upgrades.  We are on an 820 and thought the
pricing to go to an 810 was pretty attractive.  Until MAPICS entered the
picture.   Boss is now wondering what it would take to strip out MAPICS
as
we have a ton of custom code anyway.  He's thinking maybe we can write
the
code ourselves for the small portion of MAPICS we do use.

If you have enough disk-space, you may want to consider the
Backup-to-disk option.  The resulting Save-files (located in library
AMSLIBy, where y=your data environment id) can be saved to tape at your
convenience for off-site storage and the file restores can be processed
much faster from disk.

It may save time, but from my experience, most restore operations hit
system response pretty hard.

Manually refreshed our test environment this morning using last night's
backup tape.  All went smoothly except our system really slowed down
during
the restore from tape.  Restore was from a MAGSTAR 3570 of AMFLIBE which
is
40 GB.  The restore took 1.5 hours

I submitted the RSTOBJ interactively but changed the priority to 51
after my
boss called asking why the system was so slow.  For the next refresh,
what
can I do to limit the resources a RSTOBJ OBJ(*ALL) SAVLIB AMFLIBE uses?
