  • Subject: Whatever happened to ... GMD?

A recent letter to this list mentioned GMD.

I've been trying to remember the initials of that company since last May
when I went on assignment at a customer using MAPICS XA Rel 3. I worked
with MAPICS from 1980 - 1992 but then went roving in other software fields
til this year. Lo and behold, here was source code that still had a mix of
yymmdd and mmddyy formats in the date changed field, which messes up
searching for change dates.

As I recall, in the late 80's GMD was contracted by IBM to handle PTF's and
later on GMD took over MAPICS. Then I got out of the MAPICS arena for a
while and when I came back, GMD seems to have disappeared and Marcam (now
MAPICS, Inc.?) has the product.

Are there any others on MAPICS-L who share my "software geneology" interest?
If so, am I right in assuming that the source line change dates got their
formats scrambled while under the care of GMD?

Have you noticed that MAPICS source code uses 90 characters for the data
portion? If you use CRTSRCPF and copy MAPICS source into it, you will
truncate the rightmost 10 characters, losing change marks in the process.

Getting PTF'd object and source code via the Internet or on high density
tape sure beats the old 8" 1.25 MB floppies.
