I was having major speed issues, both on the OS X and Windows sides, with
VMWare Fusion running. After switching to 64-bit mode, the speed problems
pretty much went away. Thus why I suggested it.

Wow, prices have dropped! I was starting to think I need to upgrade to

Have you tried running in 64-bit mode? The system "feels" like it runs
faster (even when sitting at about 90% ram used.). Just hold down the
6 and 4 keys when booting. If you don't run into problems in that mode
after a while, you can use K64Enabler
(http://timesoftware.free.fr/k64enabler/) to always boot into 64-bit
mode or you can do it manually using the instructions here:

There is no need for the OS X kernel to run in 64 bit, unless you have
ludicruous amounts of memory (and then it finds out itself). The only
effect on a consumer Mac is to use more memory for in-kernel data
structures as they get larger with 64-bit pointers.

But again, that may warrant getting that 8 Gb upgrade :D
