I was at a Java performance talk where it was mentioned that the x86 processors are SO fast these days that hundreds of instructions can be done in the time it takes to get a single value from memory. Every time. Having more cores does not help this.
Remember, a 1 Core Power 6 520 (4800 CPW) only has one core - from a
performance standpoint, it is easily outperformed by an i7-920 (200$),
which has four of these cores.
This is not Java's fault, nor is it the fault of the people that are
working on IBM i Java. This is purely the fault of IBM's executives.
