Of the Windows OS options out there (XP, Vista, 7) I am inclined to use XP
for the foreseeable future because it works and I can run a VM instance with
768MB for RDi, and with that statement I would recommend buying a legit and
inexpensive copy off of eBay. You can find them for under $50 often times,
which is a reasonable amount of money to pay once to get RDi and any other
Windows software working on your Mac/Linux machine IMO.

BTW, I would agree that you need to be geekier to get WINE working, but not
so with Codeweavers Crossover product - it has always worked just fine for
me on two separate installs.
