Hi James,

More along the lines of "what issues do I, the RPG/COBOL/Java400 programmer,
come up against as I am developing applications in and around the IBM i".
So this is more along the lines of applications vs. a discussion of
distros, though some people might wonder which distro would be best to start
out with. To them I would say Ubuntu - www.ubuntu.com - because it seems to
be the most user friendly for noobs like myself.

Hi everyone,

I'm curious about the scope of this list. Is it intended to discuss linux
distributions and make a recommendation or only discuss applications that
could be installed on any distribution? I hope it is the latter as I
think a particular distribution is very much a personal or company
decision whereas a group of applications necessary for system i
development is likely going to be common for everyone.

And since I haven't seen any messages in the archives... first post? ;)

James Rich

if you want to understand why that is, there are many good books on
the design of operating systems. please pass them along to redmond
when you're done reading them :)
