Do you have the "xterm" package installed? The Debian xt5250 script
will fall back to alternative terminal emulators like gnome-terminal,
but it still works best with an xterm.

Wrote a long reply-mail explaining everything I have done trying to
make it work to ... finally have it working.

The solution was "dpkg-reconfigure locales" where I added
fr_FR@ISO-8859-1. After that, ibm5250 worked fine but not xt5250 nor
tn5250. The final solution was what you suggested before :

env LANG=fr_FR@ISO-8859-1 xt5250 iseriesname
