The python stuff in tn5250 hasn't been working for a long time (at least 
not for me).  I believe Jason Felice was the guy who wrote it.  As Scott 
Klement explained to me (or at least as I understood it ;) ) you need to 
duplicate the main() function of tn5250.c or x5250.c and the functions in 
cursesterm.c or x5250term.c.

I *think* the python work that Jason did was to create python bindings 
which would enable python to be used with lib5250.  But I'm not a python 
programmer and really am just guessing here.  Perhaps Jason can respond?
