Yes, there is.  I think you have to enable the framebuffer driver in the
linux kernel (but maybe not).  You do have to configure your kernel to
boot in the proper VGA mode.  Usually this is done in /etc/lilo.conf.
There are a lot of possibilities there so look in your kernel docs
(usually /usr/src/linux/Documentation/fb).
