The cd solution is another way... I heard about knoppix but never seen
it...

If you can use a "one CD Linux solution", KNOPPIX is a nice one. It's
a bootable Debian distribution on a CD. It comes with both KDE and
GNOME,
and a ton of development software. I've been very impressed with it.
