That sounds better to me too... I guess you need to insert /usr/test into the 
path beforehand, anything else? ie:

./configure --prefix=/home/brendan/test
make
make install
export PATH="/home/brendan/test/bin:$PATH"
/home/brendan/test/bin/tn5250
