This solution might be considered "cheating" but here it is...

Get a CHEAP protocol converter - like a used Perle 394e with an ASCII card.
There should be a lot of them on the used computer stuff market.  Attach it
to your AS/400 (be sure to get the Perle documentation - you'll want it) via
an RS-232 port.

Then, run a VT-100 session on your Linux box - that will be remapped (with a
few keystroke getting messed up) to the AS/400 via the old Perle box.

Another way is to figure out some ASCII device configuration description for
the CMN01 ports (on new '400s) that will respond to a VT-100 like terminal
session.

Either approach will get you in without using TCP/IP, which can be useful if
you have to ENDTCP and STRTCP on the '400.

under Linux when the TCP/IP is not running. In other words, is there any
solution under Linux to have a Sign On screen like the Operations
Console does in Client Access Express ?
