You may not have the correct CCSID selected.  As described in the man
page, you will need to run tn5250 as:

    tn5250 map=280 ...

for an AS/400 configured for Italy.

Where are you running tn5250?  From the Linux console, an xterm, rxvt,
gnome-terminal, etc.?  What Linux distribution are you using?

For running in X, the "xt5250" script should do everything to set up
reasonable keyboard mappings.
