Hmmm...  Perhaps the fact that you're running in an xt3270 session is
causing a problem.   Did you try using xt5250 instead?

That DOES sound like an "unprintable character", though (I think that this
is the only place it can assert in utility.c?)  Probably either a 0x0e or
a 0x0f, the ideographic shift-in and shift-out characters.

Jack, does line 266 in your copy of utility.c look something like this?

   case 0x0e: /* Ideographic Shift-In. */ 
   case 0x0f: /* Ideographic Shift-Out. */
      TN5250_ASSERT(0); /* FIXME: Not implemented. */
      return 0;
