ESC - r, or CTRL-r provides keyboard error reset, can't remember which for
sure.   Be sure and start from a clean session, force an error then try
esc-r, repeat for ctrl-r if esc-r fails.

re. color:

have you done the 'man tn5250' lookups, tn5250 can emulate several types of
terminals and has an option to specify, some are color some are not.
