Eric,

While a Java TN5250 is a good idea, There are alot of machines low 486 class 
that can
be made into reliable 5250 terminals by using console based version of the 
client. If
you install the base TCP/IP services, and disable everything but telnet, and 
LPD, you
have a great terminal that you can print TCP/IP to...

I think this project is valuable on its own merits.
