Rob,
You may want to look at what the default versions are for the various release.
From an old thread, Java 6 was default for V7R1.
Not sure what V7R2 default is?
Thanks
Paul

Subject: Java 7?
I have Java 6 loaded for the old stuff.
I have Java 8 loaded for the new stuff.
Trying to decide if there's any reason to leave Java 7 on the system.
I like the argument "better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it". However, it's in the list of precedence at
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/ssw_ibm_i_72/rzaha/multjdk.htm?lang=en
1 Option 14 - IBM Technology for Java 7.1 32-bit
2 Option 15 - IBM Technology for Java 7.1 64-bit
3 Option 14 - IBM Technology for Java 7.0 32-bit
4 Option 15 - IBM Technology for Java 7.0 64-bit
5 Option 11 - IBM Technology for Java 6 32-bit
6 Option 12 - IBM Technology for Java 6 64-bit
7 Option 16 - IBM Technology for Java 8.0 32-bit
8 Option 17 - IBM Technology for Java 8.0 64-bit
I am this close to just removing the one vendor application that is known to require Java 6 and removing all Java versions except 8 and just see if it all works.
I have done some testing with SAVLICPGM to save file, DLTLICPGM, and restore if needed on one lpar dedicated to that problem vendor product.
So, it's not the scariest thing in the world to do it.
