ALLOBJ *MIGHT* get you permission, depending on security level. It DOESN'T on my box.

crashes on takeoff -- some authority problem

Matters not. Without the x privilege you can't run the script. Period.

And yet, according to the directory entries, *nobody* has it,
*anywhere,* on 7.0.25 or 7.0.47, and yet it runs just fine everywhere
else, and it runs just fine now that the owner has been changed to user

One other detail that I didn't pass on to the Tomcat list (because they
wouldn't likely understand OS/400 special authorities even if I did):

On the box in question (omitting asterisks to prevent your email reader
from bolding at random), user WTADMIN has a user class of USER, group of
QPGMR, and special authorities of IOSYSCFG, JOBCTL, SAVSYS, and SECADM,
while user WINTOUCH has user class PGMR, group of QPGMR, and special
authorities of ALLOBJ and JOBCTL. On our box, my QSECOFR-equivalent user
profile has user class SECOFR, no group profile, and special authorities
