You assume, perhaps incorrectly, that everything within their firewall is running unobstructed. I ran into a situation once where an improperly configured IP packet sniffer inside a firewall was swallowing responses to certain types of requests.

*outside* their firewall and *inside* ours without any problems. So far as I'm aware, their users and box are inside the same firewall.
And so far as I understand the situation, it works for a while, then freezes, and a diagnostic produced numbers that indicate either a -1 returned from the read() on the socket's stream, or a timeout exception, as described in the original question.
