Thanks Richard. I'm considering that for the BIRT viewer piece anyway,
but first I want to try writing an interface with the BIRT API to see if
getting the BIRT viewer application out of the mix improves performance.
It seems to support a lot of functionality that I don't need. It does,
however run quite nicely on windows, so if I can't get a dramatic
improvement, that's probably what I'll end up doing.
I misread your original question and missed the part about running it externally.

If you can, then do, as I have found performance to be slightly better plus Java on x86 runs in circles around the Classic JVM for non-enterpricey applications.

Please report back your findings with BIRT. It is nice to know when you have to make a decision quick about how to do things.
