Go ahead and run the the Java component on an external Windows or Linux

You're still running against the "i" so the data is still there and
that's the most important thing for backup and recovery purposes.
Think of the outboard Tomcat Server as a Front-End Processor to the "i".
Thanks Richard. I'm considering that for the BIRT viewer piece anyway,
but first I want to try writing an interface with the BIRT API to see if
getting the BIRT viewer application out of the mix improves performance.
It seems to support a lot of functionality that I don't need. It does,
however run quite nicely on windows, so if I can't get a dramatic
improvement, that's probably what I'll end up doing.
I misread your original question and missed the part about running it externally.

If you can, then do, as I have found performance to be slightly better plus Java on x86 runs in circles around the Classic JVM for non-enterpricey applications.

Please report back your findings with BIRT. It is nice to know when you have to make a decision quick about how to do things.
