I am looking for feedback and advice to the following issue.

We have a SaaS based application running Java on a remote system. Customers
will access this system using a simple browser.

Some requirements are that in response to certain transactions, we need to
print “silently” to a LOCAL printer without user intervention. We plan to
allow users to configure which of their local printers are to be used along
with IP addresses, etc.

So again, the application is remote, all the data is remote but at certain
times we need to print packing labels, invoices to their local printer
automatically.

We don’t want to require VPN or client listener utilities that would need to
be installed. Local printers are mostly likely behind firewalls and not
available directly from the CLOUD/SaaS application.

Our current “thought” is having a SIGNED applet that would communicate with
the server and with the local printers by sending print stream data. A
SIGNED applet would be able to access local resources. Other ideas or
approaches?

Thanks, Paul
