but they did have a (patented) garbage collector that didn't use the
'stop the world' algorithm, which was unique.

Patent #? IBM certainly did some great work in the GC world, but the
only thing I've ever seen w/ZERO pauses also had no heap compaction.
That's sort of like saying "I've invented a car that needs no gas, of
course it has no engine, and can't go anywhere, but it needs no gas!"
